The Destruction of Nineveh

2 ^(A)The scatterer has come up against you.
    ^(B)Man the ramparts;
    watch the road;
dress for battle;^[a]
    collect all your strength.

²For ^(C)the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
as the majesty of Israel,
for plunderers have plundered them
and ^(D)ruined their branches.

³The shield of his mighty men is red;
    ^(E)his soldiers are clothed in scarlet.
The chariots come with flashing metal
    on the day he musters them;
    the cypress spears are brandished.
⁴^(F)The chariots race madly through the streets;
    they rush to and fro through the squares;
they gleam like torches;
    they dart like lightning.
⁵He remembers ^(G)his officers;
    ^(H)they stumble as they go,
they hasten to the wall;
    the siege tower^[b] is set up.
⁶^(I)The river gates are opened;
    the palace ^(J)melts away;
⁷its mistress^[c] is ^(K)stripped;^[d] she is carried off,
    her slave girls ^(L)lamenting,
moaning like doves
    and beating their breasts.
⁸^(M)Nineveh is like a pool
    whose waters run away.^[e]
“Halt! Halt!” they cry,
    but ^(N)none turns back.
⁹Plunder the silver,
    plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
    or of the wealth of all precious things.

¹⁰^(O)Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    ^(P)Hearts melt and ^(Q)knees tremble;
^(R)anguish is in all loins;
    ^(S)all faces grow pale!
¹¹Where is the lions' den,
    the feeding place of ^(T)the young lions,
where the lion and lioness went,
    where his cubs were, with ^(U)none to disturb?
¹²^(V)The lion tore enough for his cubs
    and ^(W)strangled prey for his lionesses;
he filled his caves with prey
    and his dens with torn flesh.

¹³^(X)Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and ^(Y)I will burn your^[f] chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and ^(Z)the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

The Death of John the Baptist

14 ^(A)At that time ^(B)Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, ²and he said to his servants, ^(C)“This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” ³For ^(D)Herod had seized John and bound him and ^(E)put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,^[a] ⁴because John had been saying to him, ^(F)“It is not lawful for you to have her.” ⁵And though he wanted to put him to death, ^(G)he feared the people, because they held him to be ^(H)a prophet. ⁶But when Herod's ^(I)birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, ⁷so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. ⁸Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” ⁹And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. ¹⁰He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, ¹¹and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. ¹²And ^(J)his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

¹³Now when Jesus heard this, ^(K)he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. ¹⁴When he went ashore he ^(L)saw a great crowd, and ^(M)he had compassion on them and healed their sick. ¹⁵Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; ^(N)send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” ¹⁶But Jesus said, “They need not go away; ^(O)you give them something to eat.” ¹⁷They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” ¹⁸And he said, “Bring them here to me.” ¹⁹Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, ^(P)he looked up to heaven and ^(Q)said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. ²⁰And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. ²¹And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water

²²^(R)Immediately he ^(S)made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. ²³And after he had dismissed the crowds, ^(T)he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When ^(U)evening came, he was there alone, ²⁴but the boat by this time was a long way^[b] from the land,^[c] beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. ²⁵And ^(V)in the fourth watch of the night^[d] he came to them, walking on the sea. ²⁶But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, ^(W)they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. ²⁷But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ^(X)“Take heart; it is I. ^(Y)Do not be afraid.”

²⁸And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” ²⁹He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and ^(Z)walked on the water and came to Jesus. ³⁰But when he saw the wind,^[e] he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ^(AA)“Lord, save me.” ³¹Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, ^(AB)“O you of little faith, why did you ^(AC)doubt?” ³²And when they got into the boat, ^(AD)the wind ceased. ³³And ^(AE)those in the boat ^(AF)worshiped him, saying, ^(AG)“Truly you are ^(AH)the Son of God.”

Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret

³⁴^(AI)And when they had crossed over, they came to land at ^(AJ)Gennesaret. ³⁵And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and ^(AK)brought to him all who were sick ³⁶and implored him that they might only touch ^(AL)the fringe of his garment. And ^(AM)as many as touched it were made well.

Woe to Nineveh

3 Woe to ^(A)the bloody city,
    all full of lies and plunder—
    ^(B)no end to the prey!
²The crack of the whip, and ^(C)rumble of the wheel,
    ^(D)galloping horse and ^(E)bounding chariot!
³Horsemen charging,
    flashing sword and ^(F)glittering spear,
^(G)hosts of slain,
    heaps of corpses,
dead bodies without end—
    they stumble over the bodies!
⁴And all for the countless whorings of the ^(H)prostitute,
    ^(I)graceful and of deadly charms,
who betrays nations with her whorings,
    and peoples with her charms.

⁵^(J)Behold, I am against you,
    declares the Lord of hosts,
    and ^(K)will lift up your skirts over your face;
and I will make nations look at ^(L)your nakedness
    and kingdoms at your shame.
⁶I will throw filth at you
    and ^(M)treat you with contempt
    and make you ^(N)a spectacle.
⁷And all who look at you ^(O)will shrink from you and say,
“Wasted is ^(P)Nineveh; ^(Q)who will grieve for her?”
    ^(R)Where shall I seek comforters for you?

⁸^(S)Are you better than ^(T)Thebes^[a]
    that sat ^(U)by the Nile,
with water around her,
    her rampart a sea,
    and water her wall?
⁹^(V)Cush was her strength;
    Egypt too, and that without limit;
    ^(W)Put and the ^(X)Libyans were her^[b] helpers.

¹⁰^(Y)Yet she became an exile;
    she went into captivity;
^(Z)her infants were dashed in pieces
    at the head of every street;
for her honored men ^(AA)lots were cast,
    ^(AB)and all her great men were bound in chains.
¹¹^(AC)You also will be drunken;
    you will go into hiding;
^(AD)you will seek a refuge from the enemy.
¹²All your fortresses are ^(AE)like fig trees
    with first-ripe figs—
if shaken they fall
    into the mouth of the eater.
¹³Behold, your troops
    ^(AF)are women in your midst.
The gates of your land
    are wide open to your enemies;
    fire has devoured your bars.

¹⁴^(AG)Draw water for the siege;
    ^(AH)strengthen your forts;
go into the clay;
    tread the mortar;
    take hold of the brick mold!
¹⁵There will the fire devour you;
    the sword will cut you off.
    It will ^(AI)devour you ^(AJ)like the locust.
Multiply yourselves ^(AK)like the locust;
    multiply ^(AL)like the grasshopper!
¹⁶You increased ^(AM)your merchants
    more than the stars of the heavens.
    ^(AN)The locust spreads its wings and flies away.

¹⁷Your ^(AO)princes are ^(AP)like grasshoppers,
    ^(AQ)your scribes^[c] like clouds of locusts
settling on the fences
    in a day of cold—
when the sun rises, they fly away;
    no one knows where they are.

¹⁸Your shepherds ^(AR)are asleep,
    O king of Assyria;
    ^(AS)your nobles slumber.
Your people ^(AT)are scattered on the mountains
    with none to gather them.
¹⁹There is no easing your hurt;
    ^(AU)your wound is grievous.
All who hear the news about you
    ^(AV)clap their hands over you.
For ^(AW)upon whom has not come
    your unceasing evil?

¹⁸Some are ^(A)arrogant, ^(B)as though I were not coming to you. ¹⁹But ^(C)I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people but their power. ²⁰For ^(D)the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. ²¹What do you wish? ^(E)Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

5 It is actually reported that there is ^(F)sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, ^(G)for a man has his father's wife. ²And ^(H)you are arrogant! Ought you ^(I)not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

³For though ^(J)absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. ⁴When you are assembled ^(K)in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, ⁵you are ^(L)to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so ^(M)that his spirit may be saved ^(N)in the day of the Lord.^[a]

⁶^(O)Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that ^(P)a little leaven leavens the whole lump? ⁷Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. ⁸Let us therefore celebrate the festival, ^(Q)not with the old leaven, ^(R)the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

⁹I wrote to you in my letter ^(S)not to associate with sexually immoral people— ¹⁰^(T)not at all meaning ^(U)the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, ^(V)since then you would need to go out of the world. ¹¹But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone ^(W)who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. ¹²For what have I to do with judging ^(X)outsiders? ^(Y)Is it not those inside the church^[b] whom you are to judge? ¹³God judges^[c] those outside. ^(Z)“Purge the evil person from among you.”
